Last July, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam asked the Ministry of Transport to approve the planning for Quang Tri airport for the period up to 2030.In particular, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam proposed a plan in Gio Quang and Gio Mai communes, Gio Linh district, about 7km from Dong Ha city, a 4C domestic airport, sharing civil and military.At the same time, the runway and landing will have a size of 2,400m, a width of 45m, the road structure to ensure the operation of aircraft A320, A321 and equivalent. In addition, a system of parallel taxiways, connecting taxiways and aircraft parking lots will be built to ensure 5 aircraft parking positions.
Quang Tri Airport is planned to build 1 passenger terminal in the southern area of the civil aircraft yard, scale of 2 elevations, a total construction floor area of about 10,000m2, capacity of 1 million passengers / year and have reserves to expand as needed.
With the cargo terminal, in the first phase, the volume of goods transported is not high, so when the passenger terminal is built, the cargo and luggage handling ground will be calculated and arranged in the passenger terminal area. However, land reserves are still reserved for the construction of cargo terminals when demand increases.
According to calculations, the total amount needed to implement this plan is up to more than 8,000 billion.
Many corporations want to invest
Previously, FLC Group proposed to approve the policy of research and investment in the project of Quang Tri Airport.
Another major investor is TPI Group of Thailand. On September 26, 2018, the People’s Committee of Quang Tri Province and TPI Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MOA) on the investment and development of Southeast Quang Tri Economic Zone.
Specifically, the two sides agreed to coordinate research and development cooperation in many projects. Notably, which includes the construction of Quang Tri airport according to the PPP model.
The PPP project Quang Tri was assigned to Vietnam Construction Investment and Services Joint Stock Company (VISC) as an integrated part of the overall project development of TPI in Quang Tri.
In addition, during the meeting between Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Quan Chinh and Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Founder Chairman, Vice Chairman of Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company in December 2019, Vietjet also booked research and development of airports in Quang Tri.
Representative of Vietjet said that the airline will send a mission to Quang Tri to survey and research the airport construction investment as well as some key industries of the Group in Quang Tri in the coming time.
According to Decision No. 236 of the Prime Minister approving the adjustment of the planning for development of air transport for the period to 2020, with a vision to 2030, Quang Tri Airport is one of 28 domestic airports putting into operation in the period from 2020 – 2030 with the scale of civil aviation level 4C, land use area of 312ha.
Quang Tri Airport is about 93km north of Dong Hoi airport and 88km south of Phu Bai international airport.
