Hana Micron to ramp up fingerprinting sensor packages after expansion in Vietnam

South Korea’s Hana Micron Inc. will activate its second plant in Vietnam next month to bump up annual capacity in fingerprinting sensor packages to 210 million units to meet demand in biometrics applications.

The second plant inauguration was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but the company’s plan to boost its local capacity by 3 million units per month or 210 million a year remains on track, Hana Micron’s chief executive Lee Dong-cheol told Maeil Business Newspaper last week.

Hana Micron, a global leader in semiconductor packaging and testing, supplies fingerprinting sensor packages to smartphone and notebook makers around the world.

The new plant was completed in March at an investment of around 50 billion won ($41.6 million) for production lines on a land site of about 20,000 square meters.

The company’s first Vietnamese plant was established in 2016.

The company is looking forward to additional orders from global smartphone and semiconductor manufacturers after the expansion.

Hana Micron, which specializes in semiconductor packaging such as fingerprint sensor packaging and radio frequency (RF) packaging, has recently drawn attention for its role in the increasing supply of chip scale packaging (CSP) and system-in-packaging (SiP) that better meet a trend of smaller and lighter semiconductors in the industry.

Hana Micron earned recognition in the global semiconductor packaging market for its 2018 development of Hanaflex, the world`s first 3D flexible semiconductor packaging technology, which enables bendable, flexible and smaller chip packages for wearables, smart cards, and medical devices.

Hana Micron developed a fingerprint recognition module that can be mounted on smart cards with Hanaflex technology for sensors from Fingerprint Cards (FPC), a Swedish biometrics company.

Hana Micron’s technology for packaging and testing can be applied to both memory and non-memory semiconductors.

Last year the company invested 40 billion won in the headquarters of Asan, Chungnam, to strengthen its packaging test lineup.
